VoIP Company Inside Wiring

VoIP Company Inside Wiring Conversion

Please note due to differences in home wiring such as age, amount of wiring used, type of wiring used, how the jacks are wired and other factors I am unable to guarantee your jacks will be able to be powered by your internet phone provider or the level of call quality.

Also due to wiring differences, Network Maintenance from your VoIP company will be limited in troubleshooting to only ruling out the analog telephone adaptor as the source of a service issue. If you do not achieve the results you require you will need to consult the help of a wiring professional.

Follow these instructions at your own risk! By continuing to read you are agreeing that you will not hold the site creator, Get Real Marketing or any other person, entity, or VoIP company associated with these instructions liable for any reason regarding the telephone wiring in your home.

Another option would be to purchase a multiple handset phone system. Plug the base into the internet VoIP phone adaptor and the handsets where you need them.

This option works best in single -family homes. You may not be able to modify your existing wiring if you live in an apartment or a multiple -family dwelling.

Please check with the property owner before making any modifications to wiring that may affect other people.

Now we can talk about how to wire your home to work with your VoIP company . Modifying your home phone wiring is not difficult. However, since your lines carry voltage, there's always a risk of causing a fire or damage. If you feel you are not competent doing the work yourself, you should hire a professional electrician or telephone technician to do the job instead.

Please note that when modifying your telephone wiring to enable your internet phone provider to work with your existing home phone jacks, you will be completely disconnecting yourself from the phone company and your current phone will not work. However, once modified the process is easily reversed if required.

Inside Wiring Instructions For Intnernet Phone Providers

(Proceed At Your Own Risk)

» Step 1 - Disconnect Phone Lines And Prepare To Connect Your VoIP Company

To modify your home wiring you must first separate the inside phone wiring from the lines connected to your home by the phone company. You must complete this process , even if you think your phone line is already dead.

Before you connect your internet VoIP phone from your VoIP company be sure to find the box normally located on the outside of your house. It's located where the telephone lines come into your house from the street.

This is often referred to as the Network Interface Unit or Point of Demarcation, see figure 1 - network interface. It is the spot where the phone company owned wiring meets the home wiring you own.

The box may be closed with a screw or fastener. You should be able to access the side containing the wires going into your home. You may not be able to access the side with the lines coming from the street. You should see a ground wire (usually a green wire) coming out of the phone company side of the box. Please do not disconnect it as the ground wire protects you against power surges in the wiring caused by lightning strikes.

Once you've opened your side of the interface box, you should see one or more sets of screw terminals inside. Each of these will have a piece of wire that looks like a short phone cord. The phone connector on the end will be plugged into a corresponding jack as shown in figure 2 below.

If you have only one line coming into your home you should have only one set of screw terminals. To disconnect from the phone company, simply unplug each of the short telephone wires from its corresponding jack. In the example below we see 2 phone lines coming into the home in which case we would simply unplug both jacks.

Once you have disconnected the wiring you want to make it obvious that you have modified the wiring purposely and it should not be reconnected. This will avoid any risks to your inside equipment. Wrap the end of each of the telephone wires you just unplugged with electrical tape so it can't be plugged back in.

Next clearly label the inside of the box using a pen with waterproof ink or permanent marker with a message (Example: "Do not reconnect wiring! Modified for internet VoIP phone service! You will damage inside equipment! ”). Regardless of the wording you use be sure it is easy to read and obvious that the wiring should not be reconnected. It may also be helpful to label the outside of the box.

Once the labeling is complete you can also wrap a nylon tie -wrap or wire wrap around the box so it can't be opened without cutting the wrap. You want to make it difficult and inconvenient as possible for someone to accidentally reconnect the wiring.

» Step 2 - Verify Disconnection

Once you have separated your home's inside wiring from the phone company's you will need to be sure the lines are disconnected before connecting service coming from your VoIP company.

Pick up a phone plugged into a jack that had worked prior to you separating the wiring. Be sure the phone you are using does not require an outside power source like a cordless phone.

The easiest way to tell if your wiring job was completed correctly is to pick up the phone and blow in it. There should be absolutely no sound. The line should be totally dead. If your line is not dead, you need to go back and check to see the phone you are using does not require an outside power source to work or check the wire separation work you just completed.

If the separation work is correct and your line is not dead, it means somehow voltage is still being carried on the line usually by the phone you are using that requires a power source. DO NOT CONNECT the adapter you received from your VoIP company. You will need to consult a professional electrician or telephone technician for additional help.

» Step 3 - VoIP Company Connection

If you have your inside home wiring successfully separated and you have confirmed there is no sound on the line, you are ready to start connecting your VoIP company to work with your inside wiring.

Just plug your cable modem into the internet voip phone adapter you received when you signed up for service with your VoIP company. Then plug a standard telephone cord into the line 1 port on your adaptor and the other end into any previously working telephone jack in your home. Once this is complete the internet phone signal will go to the other jacks in your home. Installing internet phone provider service gives a more detailed explanation.

Depending on the existing wiring you have there may be a limit to the number of phones you can connect to a single internet voip phone adaptor. If there are too many phones connected, you may get signal fade, and all of the phones may not ring when a call comes in. I recommend you connect a maximum of five phones to a single internet voip phone adaptor.
