Call Waiting

Don't miss a call when you are on the phone, call waiting will allow you to take another call if it comes in while you are talking with someone else.

This is a great feature if you are expecting an important call because it will ensure the caller will get through even if someone else calls you in the meantime.

Caller ID

Identify a caller before you ever answer the phone. This feature will give you a heads up on who is calling so you can choose whether or not to take the call.

If you like to know who is calling before you answer the phone, this feature is exactly what you need.

Call Forwarding

Forward you calls to another number if you are expecting an important call that you can't miss.

If you know you are going to be gone away from home you can have your calls automatically forwarded to a number of your choice. It might be a cell phone, a work phone, or a phone number of a friend where you are going to be located. This is an excellent feature if you must be reached right away.

Call Return

If you miss a call and you aren't sure who the caller was you can reach them by using this feature, usually by simply dialing *69 from a touchtone phone.

This is a great feature if you don't use caller ID, you can return a call without knowing who the caller was.

Caller ID Blocking

Block your information from being received by the caller ID of the party you are calling.

I don't recommend using this very often as most people won't answer a call if they don't recognize the number on their caller ID. I would use this feature if and only if you really need to hide your information from the party you are calling.

Call Blocking

Prevent unwanted callers from being able to reach you, by giving them a fast busy signal or sending them directly to voicemail.

This is a great feature if you don't want someone calling you from a particular number. It gives you control over who can call you and is a great way to manage your calls.

3-Way Calling

Talk with two people at the same time. Simply dial the first number then dial the second number and you are connected. You can even connect a person in on your call waiting line.

This is an awesome feature what can I say. It's great because now you can talk with friends and family at the same time. It's a convenient way to send the word about good news or to just keep in touch with what is going on.

Voicemail

Just like an answering machine, voicemail will take your call if you don't answer and allow callers to leave you a message.

A great feature because you can check your voicemail from any phone anywhere, you don't have to be at home to check it like you do your answering machine. Voicemails are held by the service provider instead of at home that old answering machine you previously had.

911 Service

This feature is a little different when using voice over internet phone service than you might think. When you dial 911 from an internet phone your call is routed to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) based on your area code. Unless the provider supports E911, the operator won't have any idea who you are or where you are calling from meaning that you will have to give the operator all of your information. This can be especially dangerous if there is an emergency that requires immediate attention, which is usually why you dial 911 in the first place.

I would NOT choose a provider that doesn't provide Ehanced 911 (E911). When choosing a provider be sure to ask if they support E911 in order to ensure your family's safety so the operator knows who you are and where you are calling from.

Local Number Portability

This feature allows you to keep your same phone number instead of getting a new one. Most people have had the home phone number for years and are unwilling to change it so this option allows you to switch between providers and still keep the same number.

This is a must for just about everyone. Be sure you check with a provider to ensure they can port your number. Because voice over internet phone service is so new, some coverage areas will differ based on the age of the provider.

E911 Service

Ehanced 911 or E911 routes your call to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) and allows the operator to know the orgination of the call meaning that your name, phone number, and address will be transferred immediately to the operator.

This feature is an absolute must! It saves time from having to give the operator all of your information in case of an emergency that requires immediate attention which is usually why you dial 911 in the first place. If you move or travel simply login to your account and update your address to ensure you 911 calls are routed to the proper PSAP.

I would only choose providers that have this service available and would stay away from those who don't.

Call Someone Now

Call someone from your VoIP phone even if you don't have your adapter box with you. Simply login to your account manager online and click call someone now, type in the number where you are calling from and the number you want to call to. Your calls will then be connected across the provider's VoIP network and will look like you called that person from home.

This is a great feature for the coporate traveler. If you travel and forget your VoIP box, but are staying in a hotel you could use the call someone now feature to get around the long distance costs of using the hotel room phone.

Another great example is for college students. Instead of using cell phone minutes or the long distance on their dorm room phone they could use the call someone now feature to call home as much as the want at zero cost.

Contact Lists

Create multiple contact lists with your online account manger. After you store a name and a number their information will show up on your caller ID as the information your stored in your contact list.

An excellent feature to really personalize your phone calls. Now you can have "Mom" displayed on your caller ID everytime she calls or whatever you want especially if you have a "Mother-in-Law". I probably shouldn't tell you that because it could get us both in trouble!

Enhanced Voicemail

Receive your voicemails in an email attachement, listen to them from any phone, listen to them online through your web account manager, be notified of a voicemail with a text message on your cell phone or have your voicemail call your cell phone directly to deliver the message.

Never miss a voicemail again, with enhanced voicemail you get a whole new way of receiving and being notified of new messages. You can listen to your messages on any computer or dial in from any phone. You even have the ability to save messages on to your computer from those loved ones you care about so dearly.

Faxing

The ability to send a fax through an internet phone .

Check with your provider to ensure faxing is supported. Very few providers support a 100% guaranteed fax service. Depending on your needs you would be better off selecting a provider that supports faxing 100% so you can rest assured your faxes are being sent through properly. Find Me/Follow Me Call Forwarding

Never miss an important call again! With find me/follow me call forwarding you can have your calls forwarded to a serious of numbers so you can be reached wherever you're located. Most providers will allow you to forward your calls up to 5 different locations at a time. You can even have all 5 locations ring simultaneously if you wish to be reached right away.

This is an excellent feature if you need to be reached right away. You could program your service to ring your home phone first and if you don't pick up you could have it forwarded to your work phone, if you don't answer there you could have it sent to your cell phone and up to 2 additional numbers for a total of 5 numbers. If you must be reached right away you can set your account to ring all locations at the exact same time.

Call Transfer

Recieve a call that might be important for someone else in your family and you can transfer the call right to their cell phone or work phone.

An extremely useful feature if you have a important call that comes in that needs immediate attention.

Virutal Phone Numbers

These are additional number that can be added to your same phone line from a different area code. For instance you could have friends and family who live in New York City so you could get a local New York phone number added to your line in Seattle and your friends and family could make a local call in New York but it would ring you in Seattle. You are able to get as many virutal numbers as you like.

What a great feature to relieve family and friends of long distance charges if they don't use voice over internet phone service. It's incredible when you think about the ability to get international virtual numbers. Certain providers allow you to purchase phone numbers in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and various other countries right here in the US. This gives international families the ability to make local calls in their home country that ring family members who are here in the US.
