What Is High Speed Internet?
That is a great question and those who are new to technology or the internet may be wondering what broadband or high speed internet really is. Think of broadband internet as a way to browse the internet very fast without having to tie up your phone line.
There are several advantages of using high speed internet that include but are not limited to:
- Faster Speeds that Dial-up
- An always-on connection
- Doesn't tie up your phone line
- The ability to connect multiple computers to the internet
- Ability to use advanced services like Internet Phone Service
The two most common types of high speed internet are DSL and Cable. You are able to get DSL through your local phone company, however I wouldn't recommend it because you usually have to sign a contract and in order to get "preferred pricing" you must also have their local phone service.
The second and more preferred type is cable high speed internet through your local cable tv provider. With cable high speed internet you will have faster speeds than DSL and you won't have to sign a contract. The biggest advantage of using cable over DSL is when using technologies like internet phone service. Cable not only offers more reliablity and faster speeds but you will be able to elminate your local phone company all together and take your phone number with you.
I realize that in some cases, for those who live out in rural America like myself, cable or DSL isn't an option. As an alternative if you would really like to have high speed internet access you may look at getting a satellite dish. Today most satellite tv providers do offer some type of high speed internet.
I wouldn't recommend satellite internet if you plan on using internet phone service because satellite technology still isn't quite as reliable as DSL or cable. If you were to have a cloudy or very windy day your phone may sound a little shakey or even sound like there is an echo in the background. If satellite internet is your only option and you plan on using internet phone service as your primary phone I would highly recommend you test it before you buy it.
